Red Brick Ballet |
I was in Philadelphia with a friend to watch her son play rugby. Near Temple University, we turned onto a street that looked like a war zone with abandoned buildings, broken windows and general deterioration. It was a painfully impoverished neighborhood. In the middle of the street, three young boys were tossing a brick. At first, I thought they were going to throw it at our car. Then, I realized they were just playing with the brick, much like more privileged children would play with a ball. Their movements were graceful and reminded me of ballet dancers. When I returned home, I painted “Red Brick Ballet.”
